Vortex Springs

Everyone is welcome to come along and dive with SDI.

Our weekend trips to Vortex Springs are open to anyone who would like to tag along just to go diving. You don't have to be enrolled in a course to dive with us. Most weekends we have certified divers traveling with us to get in some spring diving during the winter months. There is no charge to go with us.

During the colder months of the year, (October thru April) SDI uses Vortex Springs Florida for training dives. Vortex provides a constant water temperature of between 68 and 70 degrees year round.

We arrange for training dives to begin at 1:00 pm Saturday and conclude around noon Sunday so that you may drive down Saturday morning and drive home Sunday afternoon. (The start time will be 10:00 am during January and February so you may want to drive down Friday during those months.)

From North Alabama take I-65 south to Montgomery. In Montgomery take I-85 North to Taylor road. Turn right (south) on Taylor road and continue until Taylor road dead ends into highway 231/82. Turn left (south) onto highway 231/82 and continue to Troy Alabama. Click the link below for a map showing these directions.

When you come into Troy you will need to turn right onto highway 87 at the third traffic light in Troy. Click the link below for a map showing these directions.

About 7 miles south of Troy highway 87 splits off to the right. Stay right and continue on highway 87 to Elba Alabama. Click the link below for a map showing these directions.

When you come into Elba bear left to stay on 87. When you get to the town square, (the courthouse will be on your left) turn left and continue about half way up the hill out of town and turn right to remain on highway 87. Click the link below for a map showing these directions.

When you cross the state line into Florida you will be almost exactly 15 miles from the entrance to Vortex Springs. Highway 87 becomes Florida highway 81 when you cross the state line. Look for the sign marking the entrance to Vortex Springs on your left. Click the link below for a map showing these directions.

When you leave Vortex Springs turn left onto highway 81 and follow it about 5 miles to I-10. Take I-10 WEST bound to the next exit, DeFuniak Springs.
