Sidemount Diving
This list is meant to give you a head start on getting what you need to do
recreational and technical dives in sidemount. I’m pretty sure I remembered
everything, but when you’re getting your rig together, ask lots of questions!
I know there seems to be lots of “small parts”. Not to worry! One of the things we do in the Sidemount class is put it all together… together. Gear for Sidemount Diving (recreational) Sidemount BCD – Dive Rite Nomad recommended Two regulators – recommend “turret style” Apeks or Dive Rite, one with 7’ hose, one with 40” hose, both with right angle adapters or swivel adapters on second stages. Regulator necklace – on regulator with 40” hose. Two SPGs on 6” hoses Elastic hose retainers (3) – sized for your tanks. Bungees - should come with BCD. You may have to go through a couple of sets to get the right size. Large bolt Snaps (4) – stainless steel Nylon rope – ¼” seven or eight feet Cam Bands (2) – the kind with stainless buckles Weight retainers (2) – the kind with smooth slots, not serrated Weight pouches (2 or 4) – two if you’re using steel tanks, four if you’re using aluminum tanks Wrist mounted dive computer. Slate & pencil Surface signaling devices, whistle or safety sausage. Mask & Fins Appropriate exposure protection Gear for Sidemount Diving (technical) All of the above, plus Delayed Surface Marker Buoy (DSMB) or lift bag, 100lbs lift. Finger spool – 100’ – 150’ Two cutting devices – small knife and line cutter or shears Regulators for stage bottles – one for Tec 40 & 45, two for Tec 50. SPGs for stage bottles with 6” hoses. Elastic hose retainers – one per stage bottle. 5/16” Bungee cord – 40” per stage bottle. For marine applications Hose clamp big enough to go around your stage bottle Tubular webbing sufficient to wrap around your stage bottle. Bolt Snaps (2) – large, two per stage bottle. 1-1/4” Quick links (2) – two per stage bottle Wrist mounted computers (2) – multi-gas or nitrox is best, but need at least two ways to determine depth and time. Wrist slate & pencil Back-up mask Wet notes or underwater paper & pencil Lights (3) – canister primary, two backups Exposure protection – probably a drysuit |
